Sports Physiotherapy Case-Study

In this sports physiotherapy case study, the patient, an athlete, experienced a groin injury while marathon running, specifically affecting the left hip adductor longus muscle and iliopsoas muscle. Subsequently, the athlete underwent Sports Physiotherapy at our clinic in Etobicoke. The pain was concentrated around the myotendon junction of these muscles. Such sports injuries typically result from forceful muscle contractions during directional changes while running. This sports injury was classified as a grade 1 strain, indicating minimal damage with no loss of function or strength. Treatment for this type of sports injury involves a combination of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with specific exercises to improve flexibility and strength in the affected muscles. A gradual return to running activities is usually recommended to prevent re-injury. Proper warm-up routines and conditioning exercises may also help reduce the risk of similar injuries in the future.

Modalities Used

In addressing the groin injury sustained by the athlete during marathon running, a multi-faceted treatment approach was adopted. Modalities leveraged were, Interferential Current (IFC) therapy were employed to alleviate pain and promote blood flow, while Ultrasound therapy aided in reducing inflammation. Emphasis was placed on improving control and strength in the hip flexors and adductor muscles. Stretching exercises targeted key muscle groups including the low back, hip, knee, and ankle. Gait training, proprioceptive exercises, stair climbing practice, and refining running techniques were integral parts of the rehabilitation program. The sportsman also underwent training in multidirectional mechanics and transitions to enhance agility and reduce the risk of future injuries. This strategy helped address the immediate symptoms and also aimed to strengthen muscles, improve biomechanics, and optimize performance, ensuring a smoother recovery and reducing the likelihood of recurrence.

Result

The patient underwent a three-month full rehabilitation program before returning to marathon running activities.
